San Faancisco Call. Kootlc Dorsoe, one of the best known of the braves of tne allied tribes of the Fiathead Indians, is lead as the result of twenty - -i (uuuis continuous aancing in an effort to win the prize for the best dancer at a monster powwow being held by the five tribes of the reservation. Dorsoe 's tragic end is believed to have been directly due to the applause of a number of Indian maidens and some white persons present at the dance. When it; was seen that Dorsoe was stag gering an effort was made to in duce him to stop; but the Indian girls would not refrain from singing their praises of Dorsoe and the squaws would not desist from beating the torn toms, which seemed to awaken a sav age fury in the breast of the dancer. Twenty hours of dancing fin ished the Indian, however and he feebly made his way to the river bank, where he sank in a heap and died. Instances have been known where the Flatheads have danced continuously for thirty six hours. Hears the The Kind You Have Aways BBugj Whose Child is it? Gastonia News. A letter from John I. Hammett of Cooleemee, gives an account of his getting possession of a little girl about four years old. He says she is a bright little girl, Sunday morning about 2 o'clock a man came to his house and ask ed to be driven eight miles to Barber's Junction so that he could take the train at daylight. The man had driven fifteen miles so he said. With the man was a child a few years old dressed in a little boy's clothes. Soon after the two came to Mr, Hammett s an officer arrived and asked if a little girl had come there. Mr, Hammett told him that a man nd a little boy was there and he took the officer to their room. The officer looked at them and said they were not the ones he wanted. Before leaving the officer told Mr. Hammett that there was a reward of $25 for the little girl, The officer left and soon after his departure Mr. Hammett discovered that the child was a little girl dressed in boy's clothes, Mr, Hammett took charge of the child and will hold it till he hears whose it is. The man took his departure. A letter from Cooleemee says that the child is still at Mr. Ham mett 's, The child went to sleep during the day and slept for eighteen hours. No ordinary means would wake it and the physicians succeeded only after effort. The physicians claim that it was under hypnotism. It now talks a little and says its father's name is "Bud Jackson." A large number of people have been to see the child. The New Stjle tha Boys Put on. Monroe Journal. Are you on to the latest fashion among the young men? It was brought in by the boys who had been off to school when they re turned in June. Of course, all the town boys who believe in be ing the real thing took it up at once. Tnis very latest is de scribed thus by disgusted father: I noticed for some time that all the half-grown fellows seemed to be suffering with the hot weather i more than anybody else. Every I time I saw one of them he had his coat on his arm. Nothing strange about that until I began to notice that no other folks seemed to be so hungry for cool weather, and then I began to look more closely. I next discovered that the young fellows never wore suspenders, and their trousers bagged like empty meal sacks. I next observed that to be right up to date, a fellow must have his sleeves rolled up to the elbows, and better than this to have the cuff hanging loosely about the wrist like a cannibal's beads. My boy can't go ten yards from home without his coat, yet he hasn't had it on his back in two waeks, Tis a great fashion, and I expect to see it improved upon. By fall 1 hope to see the boys going with . the trousers rolled up, the shins naked, and the socks dangling from a string around the neck." A Scotch minister instructed his clerk, who sat among the congregation during service to give a low whistle if anything in his sermon appeared to be exag gerated. On hearing the minis ter say, "In those days there were snakes fifty feet long," the clerk gave a subdued whistle "I should have said thirty feet," added the minister. Another whistle from the clerk, "On consulting Thompson's Concordance," said the minister in confusion' "I see the length is twenty feet." Still another whistle; whereon the preacher leaned over and said in a stage whisper: "Ye can whistle as much as ye like, Mac Pherson, but 1 11 not take anthier foot off for anybody!" Braye Deed of Small Boy. Chariot teObaerrer, 15th. Master Blanton Belk, a son of Rev. George W. Belk, deserves a chromo for having saved the life of a small negro boy at the swim ming pool under the culvert on the Carolina Central Railroad, near the city cremetery, yester day afternoon. After dinner several white boys went down to the pool and took a round, swim ming and diving, and as they were preparing to depart some colored lads went in. Soon one of the negroes got in water over his head: the little fellow could not swim, and before his com. panions were aware of it he was in the very throes of death. Twice he sank and rose and beckoned for help, and was gone down a third time when Blanton Belk started to his rescue, Some of the boys thought he was playing, but not so, for life had about left his body. As he dis appeared the third and last time the 12-year-old white boy, little hero that he has proven himself several times before," went for him, leaped in and caught him and swam safely to shallow water, Ihe negro was profuse in his thanks to his little rescuer, The boys who witnessed the brave feat believe that the color ed lad would have been drowned had it not been for the timelv assistance of their associate. Blanton Belk is a brave, thoughtful boy. He swims well, and is not afraid of water. A SMOOTH ARTICLE. Secre tary Wilson made public the names of four men who will com prise the statistical board, which, under the direction of Assistant Secretary "Jays, will prepare the government estimates of the cot ton acreage and yields, as well as the statistics of other crops. The board will be composed of Victor Olmstead, present associate stat istician in the bureau of statis tics; S. D. Fessenden, assistant statistician; George K. "Go to jail for ten days," said the recorder this morning to Frank Lewis, a handsome, j refined-looking young fellow. Lewis made no complaint, but followed the officer to a cell. He had been arrested for vagrancy, and pleaded guilty to the charge. Later, a policeman became interested in him and a conver sation sprang up between the two. Lewis pulled from his pocket his honorable discharge from the United States army, which had annexed to it, words of ccmpliment from the com manding officer of his regiment. ' "Just in hard luck now," said Lewis, "its all my own fault, though, I have parents in Baltimore who treated me well. I studied medicine ie the Univer sity of Maryland a year.
